Watchman
READ Ezekiel 33:1-20
Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.
-- Ezekiel 33:7 (NIV)
While running through a nearby park, I encountered a small flock of Canadian geese eating grass. Two of the geese, positioned at either end of the flock, had extended their heads upward, surveying the surrounding area, while the rest of the group focused their attention on grazing at ground level. It appeared these two geese were lookouts, and were performing their duty well as watchman.
On another occasion, while serving as the base security officer for the day, I encountered two marines relaxing in a trench at night, neglecting their guard duties. The entire unit could have been vulnerable to attack if this had been an actual combat situation. They were not performing their duty well as a watchman.
The encounter with the geese reminded me of the watchman described in Ezekiel 33. We who are familiar with God and his Word, have an obligation to warn others who may be straying from the Lord’s commands. If we warn them, and they won’t listen, the responsibility for their sin lies solely with them. But if we fail to warn them, that responsibility may fall back on us.
While most of us may not feel comfortable warning others, we owe it to them and ourselves to do so.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Be a faithful watchman.
Prayer: Father in heaven, please guide us when communicating your commands to others.
