Time’s Up
READ Romans 10
… Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
-- Romans 10:13 (NIV)
When my father-in-law lay dying in 1992, he mentioned to one of his sons that he wasn’t sure if he’d be going to heaven. Sensing the urgency of the situation, I quickly assembled the following list of scripture on notecards to give him assurance about where he'd be going when he died:
- “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).
- “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
- “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13).
- “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).
- “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God …” (John 1:12).
- “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
After he finished reading these passages, he closed his eyes, held the notecards close to his chest, and remained still for a few moments. Then he said, “These are beautiful, Rick; these are beautiful. I have called upon the name of the Lord.” He passed away later that evening.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Call on the Lord before your time is up.
Prayer: Father in heaven, please help us to repent of our sins and follow you, while there’s still time.
