Restless
READ Psalm 42
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.

“… our heart is restless until it rests in you” (Augustine, Confessions). St. Augustine of Hippo, an early church father and theologian, was raised in a Christian home during the fourth century but drifted away from the church and fell into debauchery, including the fathering of a child out of wedlock. Over time, he realized that pursuing pleasure was a dead end.
In a famous 2005 60 Minutes interview following his third Super Bowl win, Tom Brady expressed an "Is this all there is?" sentiment, questioning why achieving his ultimate goals left him feeling like there must be something greater. He pondered, "… it's gotta be more than this" and "This can't be what it's all cracked up to be." He was experiencing a void despite his massive athletic success (Mark 8:36).
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones famously wrote a 1965 song entitled, “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction.”
Blaise Pascal, the French mathematician and philosopher, wrote that “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.”
Hopefully, like the Prodigal Son described in Luke 15:11-32, we come to a point in our lives where we realize the idols of this world—e.g., sex, drugs, alcohol, fame, achievement, materialism—ultimately don’t satisfy. Turning to God, we discover “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Psalm 16:11).
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Ultimate joy and satisfaction come from God.
