Cards You’re Dealt
READ Luke 12:35-48
Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

My wife, Donna, loves playing Bridge—a trick-taking card game involving two teams of two people using a standard 52-card deck. There are many rules and conventions involved in communicating with your partner. Even if you don’t win, your team receives points for playing their cards well. At the end of each game, she generally asks herself, “Did I do the best I could with the cards I was dealt? Did I bring glory to God?”
Each person has been singularly and exceptionally created in God’s image to uniquely bring glory to Him (Genesis 1:27). Given who I am, have I done my best with the gifts and abilities God has given me? Have I brought glory to God, by cooperating with the Holy Spirit, to complete the good works he prepared for me to do before the creation of the world (Ephesians 2:10)?
Everyone is born with natural abilities, but believers are given at least one spiritual gift when they become Christians (Romans 12:3-8; 1 Corinthians 12:7; 14:2). They will one day stand before the judgment seat of Christ to be evaluated on what they did with these gifts (Romans 14:10-12; 2 Corinthians 5:10). It won’t be a judgment to determine salvation, as the believer will already be in heaven when this judgment occurs (1 John 2:2). Those who teach, preach, or hold leadership positions will be held to a higher standard (James 3:1). There will be joy over good things done and regret over missed opportunities. Crowns (i.e., rewards) will be distributed at this time (2 Timothy 2:5; 4:8; James 1:12; 1 Peter 5:4; Revelation 2:10). It’s possible to not receive any rewards (1 Corinthians 3:10-15), since Jesus will judge without partiality (Romans 2:11-16). Each believer will receive at least one commendation from God (1 Corinthians 4:5).

Have I done my best with the gifts I’ve been given?
