FIRM FOUNDATION

READ 1 Corinthians 3:10-15

“… fire will test the quality of each person’s work.”

  • 1 Corinthians 3:13b (NIV)

I encountered the ruins of a building destroyed by fire while trail-running on a nearby mountain. All that remained was the brown sandstone foundation. That got me thinking. What have I done that will last?

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 refers to the Bema Judgment, during which our Lord Jesus Christ will evaluate each believer’s life. Good works deemed to have eternal value will be richly rewarded, while deeds of only temporal value will be burned up, although the believer himself will be saved. (As stated in Ephesians 2:8-10, we do not earn our way into heaven by good works, but perform them out of our love for God and others.)

The heavens and the earth, and everything in them, will one day be burned up and replaced by a new heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21:1). Besides God and his holy angels, the only things remaining will be God’s Word (Matthew 24:35) and people (Daniel 12:2). Knowing this, why focus our energies on pursuits that will not last?

Jesus’ final command before ascending into heaven was for us to go and make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20). Invest in what’s eternal – discipleship relationships centered on the Bible, with Jesus Christ as the sure foundation (Isaiah 33:6).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Who is God calling me to pour my life into?

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, please help me prepare for the day I meet you; may I not leave empty-handed. Amen.
