Time

READ Job 14:1-5

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

--  Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

As a newly minted senior citizen, it’s become apparent that one of my most valuable commodities is time. Unfortunately, much of my time is spent on the mundane: sleeping, shaving, showering, dressing, eating, commuting, cleaning, shopping, laundering, raking, sweeping, vacuuming … the list goes on and on. What’s left is discretionary time.

My early adult life was focused on earning a living, caring for family, and serving at church. What little discretionary time I had left was spent on entertainment—watching television shows, sports events, and movies. Later in life, I’ve shifted my focus toward leaving something behind—in my case, writing Christian books and devotionals.

I’ve become acutely aware that I’ll one day have to stand before God to give an account of how I spent my time (Hebrews 9:27). As the Lord Jesus Christ reviews my life, I’ll have regrets over time wasted pursuing trivial or sinful things, but be joyful over time spent doing good works that pleased God and helped others. Even mundane tasks performed for the glory of God and benefit of others may be rewarded (1 Corinthians 10:31). I can’t change what’s happened in the past, but I can resolve to spend my time more wisely in the future.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

How can I use my time wisely today?

Prayer:  Father in heaven, my time is in your hands. Please help me to focus on doing things that are pleasing to you.

Prayer Focus:  SENIOR CITIZENS

Time is fleeting, especially as we age. Thanks, Rick, for the reminder to number our days and consider how we serve God.
