Thanksgiving

READ Colossians 3:15-17

Give thanks to the LORD for he is good; his love endures forever.

 -- 1 Chronicles 16:34 (NIV)

Our two children, their spouses, and our five grandchildren (all five years old or younger) visited us for the Thanksgiving holiday last year. It was great seeing everyone, particularly because it had been several years since we’d all been together. It was a lot of work to prepare for their visit, keep up with the grandchildren while they were here, and then clean up after they had left, but we were extremely thankful that God had enabled this reconnection.

The following Monday morning, as our daughter’s family was standing at the front doorway ready to leave, our ten-month-old granddaughter folded her hands and interlocked her fingers as if she was about to pray. We were all astonished that someone that young would have the wherewithal to do that. We immediately thanked God for the visit, prayed for them to have a safe trip home, and pondered the fine example set by our granddaughter.

God is the source of all things (Romans 11:36). In him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). Apart from him, we can do nothing (John 15:5). He sets the lonely in families (Psalm 68:6).

Since God gave us life, provides for our daily needs, guides us in the way we should go, and provides friends and families for us to fellowship with, it’s only fitting that we give him thanks. His greatest gift, however, is the gift of his son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to pay for our sins. Thanks be to God for his many blessings!
