What is Truth?

READ John 14:1-14

“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him …”

--  John 18:38 (NIV)

It’s not easy being a referee in any sport, especially soccer. When a call is made, someone is likely to be unhappy. Players may get emotional, claiming they did nothing wrong when accused of a foul, or fake being hurt after a possible foul to trick the referee into siding with them. Coaches and fans may yell at the referee, expressing anger over a call against their team. Television sports commentators may second-guess the referee after running instant replays. Parents can be incredibly disruptive at youth soccer games when expressing their displeasure with a call. Finally, it’s rare that the referee is complemented if they officiated a good game. Ultimately, there’s only one correct call to be made. The referee must do their best to make the right one in each situation, regardless of what everyone else may tell them.

What is truth? Author Steven Lawson defines it as “that which conforms with fact or reality.” Many in society express different opinions regarding what’s right or wrong. That’s because they rely on their own sources of truth and, knowingly or unknowingly, bring their worldview and biases into their decision-making. Jesus stands above all this and proclaims that he is the truth (John 14:6).

In most situations, what’s right or wrong is clear, particularly when filtered through the lens of the Bible. If it’s not clear, we can ask our Creator for guidance and discernment, guided by his Word (Psalm 119:105), the Holy Spirit (John 16:13), and other believers (Proverbs 11:14). We can always rely on Jesus to make the right call.
