READ John 4:1-15
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
-- John 4:13-14 (NIV)
My son started crying the day we brought him home from the hospital. He was only a few days old. I wasn’t sure what was wrong, as I was a new father. I picked him up, but that didn’t solve the problem. Then I checked his diaper, but it was clean. I brought him to his mother, but her milk hadn’t come in yet, so I raced to the kitchen, filled a tiny baby bottle with water, and gave it to him. After taking a few sips he quickly drifted off to sleep.
Jesus taught the Woman at the Well that the water she was drinking would only satisfy her for a time, but she’d need more later. The woman’s five ex-husbands (and current boyfriend) hadn’t satisfied her either. Jesus was saying that only God could meet her ultimate need, which was to be in right relationship with him.
Blaise Pascal wrote, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.” As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that the things of this world satisfy me for a time, but after a while, they leave me unfulfilled. The thrill soon wears off, and more is needed of whatever brought satisfaction in the first place. I have many friends who’ve sought fulfillment through illegal drugs, alcohol, pornography, possessions, or food and become addicted to them. They’ve learned the hard way that an obsession with these things ultimately ends in emptiness and, in some cases, death.
If we come to Jesus and are willing to repent of our sins, he’ll give us an abundant life that brings the meaning, purpose, and satisfaction we so desperately long for (John 10:10).
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Only Jesus brings satisfaction.
Prayer: Father in heaven, please help us to focus on you, and not the things of this world.
