Post-retirement Planning

The average American retirement lasts eighteen years. The focus of many westerners in their fifties and early sixties is on getting ready for those retirement years. Have they saved enough money? How should their money be invested? When do they expect to run out of money? When should they start taking their private and/or government pension? Which government healthcare program should they choose? Should they move to live at the location of their dreams, move near family, or stay where they are? What home improvements are needed? Do they have the proper legal documents in place (including a will, power-of-attorney, and healthcare instructions)?
The concept of retirement doesn’t exist in the Bible, with the exception of Levitical priests retiring from their normal duties at age fifty (Numbers 8:24-26). For those who are able to retire, how would God have you spend your time? Will you invest your retirement years in service to God and others, reaping a future reward, or will you focus only on pursuits that benefit yourself?
Those eighteen years in retirement—or however long your retirement will last—will go by fast. Have you planned for the trillions of years that will follow your retirement? Are you like the five wise virgins who planned for their future and will spend eternity with God in heaven? Or, are you like the five foolish virgins who failed to plan, and will spend at least a thousand years in hell waiting to be judged, followed by an eternity writhing in the lake of fire (Revelation 20)?
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Plan and be blessed, fail to plan and suffer for it.
Prayer: Father in Heaven, please help us to focus more on planning for our post-retirement years than our retirement years.
