Final Exam

I recently attended my forty-fifth college reunion. It reminded me of a nightmare I used to have: I was still in college and had a final exam later that day, but hadn’t studied yet. I’d wake up all stressed out, then realize it had only been a dream.
As noted in the scripture cited above, we’ll all have a final exam with God one day.
Those who have put their trust in Jesus alone to forgive their sins, and have repented of their current way of living, will be granted access to heaven and live with God forever (John 3:16, Luke 13:3-5). At the appointed time, they’ll be given a new perfect body and appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10). The Lord Jesus Christ will evaluate their lives and reward them based on what they did. Some will receive no rewards or recognition, while others will receive great rewards (1 Corinthians 3:11-15) and/or be assigned leadership positions (Luke 19:17-19).
Jesus taught that most people will not fit in the above category (Matthew 7:13-23). For them, judgment will be a nightmare. When they depart this life, they’ll spend at least a thousand years in hell—a place of fire and great suffering within the earth—awaiting judgment (Revelation 20:4-6). At the appointed time, they’ll receive new, indestructible bodies, then appear at the Great White Throne judgment. Their name will not be found written in the Lamb’s book of life, and the Lord Jesus Christ will have them thrown into the lake of fire, where they will suffer in maximum agony for all eternity (Revelation 20:10-15).
